Their Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory wedding brought their journey full circle, celebrating ten years of adventures, long-distance milestones, and life's biggest moments in a venue Shannon had loved since childhood. Some love stories begin with a grand gesture, while others start with a bouncy castle and a slice of pizza. Shannon and Max first met during university orientation in Halifax, where a friendly competition and an unforgettable first conversation sparked a relationship that would span a decade. Surrounded by lush tropical greenery, vibrant butterflies, and a sea of blush pink details, they created an intimate celebration filled with heartfelt vows, family support, and unforgettable memories.

CEREMONY & RECEPTION LOCATION: Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory "I grew up going to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, back when it used to be called Wings of Paradise! I always thought the conservatory was absolutely magical, and it was the first place I thought of when we started wedding planning! They were absolutely fantastic to work with – the team was super professional and very responsive! We were planning the wedding from halfway across the country, and they made it an absolute breeze! On the day of, they were incredibly attentive, and everything went so smoothly, so we didn't have to worry about a thing! And, even better, the next day when it was time to pick up all of the decor, they had it all taken down and organized for us, so that removed all of the stress after the wedding." - S

PHOTOGRAPHER: Jo Boucher Photography "The Conservatory gave us a list of recommended vendors, and we picked Jo off the list! She was fantastic to work with, and came very prepared for the Conservatory. It was pretty hot in there, and she brought one of those small, motorized fans, which also happened to fit our colours perfectly. Most of the pictures of me holding my bouquet have the fan nicely tucked behind (as I was very much not prepared for the amount of heat in the Conservatory while wearing so much dress at once). She was very organized with the planned pictures, and also did a fantastic job catching the candid moments as well!" - S

COLOUR PALETTE: "Because the underskirt of my dress was beige, we went for a nice pink gradient for our colours! We originally planned on doing a rose gold and dark green theme, but because there was already so much green in the Conservatory, we stuck with pink bridesmaid dresses and pink decor. My grandmother even made a special trip to the Lindor store a city or two over just to get Lindors for the favours in the right shade of pink, so we were very committed. In the end, it was a very pink wedding!" - S

TELL US YOUR STORY!: "As my mom always jokes, I went halfway across the country for university and brought home a boy from Oakville. For context, I grew up in Guelph, ON, which is 45 minutes away, and both Max and I met our very first night of university, at the University of King's College in Halifax, NS. To set the scene, it was a warm September evening in 2015, I was 17, he was 18, and our university had set up a fair in the quad, complete with a bouncy castle, to welcome the new first years. One of the orientation leaders was trying snagging the stray first years who didn't have a friend group yet, and throwing us together in an attempt to get us to make friends. 

Max and I were not talking with each other at the start, as I was chatting with another guy in the make shift group, but Max really wanted to, and I really wanted to go on the bouncy castle. He got it in his head that if he lasted longer on the bouncy castle than the other guy did, he had a chance with me. He did manage to last longer on the bouncy castle, as none of the rest of us were aware that there was a competition, and we wound up chatting afterwards.

He made for great conversation, and we wound up ditching the others to hang out just the two of us. Our university also put out pizza that night, and in an attempt to get back to talking to me faster, he shoved the entire slice of pizza in his mouth at once. That may have backfired horribly, as he burned the roof of his mouth and took way longer to actually chew the whole thing, but at the same time, maybe it didn't, because that was the moment I knew he was special. We kissed that very first night, and made it official a couple weeks later. 

In the ten years since then, we've been on countless adventures such as hiking the Inca trail together, had the ultimate relationship stress test because we moved in with each other for the first time two months before COVID lockdowns happened, and shaped each other into the people we are today. I got my Masters degrees, he graduated law school, we dealt with a couple bouts of long distance, I maybe got a bit ahead of myself buying my wedding dress around Christmas of 2023, and he proposed on the beach in Cuba in February of 2024, shortly before we bought our first house together and adopted our two darling kittens. It's been a wild ten years together, but I couldn't imagine doing it with anyone else!

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: "The biggest challenge when it came to planning our wedding was the fact that we live in Prince Edward Island, and we were planning a wedding in Ontario. We couldn't just check out vendors or do menu tastings ourselves, and we didn't want to have to lug a bunch of decor back and forth. Luckily, the whole reason we were planning it in Ontario is because our families are both there, so we had to outsource a lot of it to them! While other couples were at the venue for a special menu tasting, we had to enlist our moms and then rely on their notes after the fact. We didn't order stuff to our place in PEI, because it didn't make sense to then have to haul it to Ontario, so I wound up trusting my mom and sister with their opinions on details and favours. Really, most of the difficulties with planning a wedding halfway across the country were resolved by outsourcing to my family." - S

BEST MEMORY: "Exchanging vows. We wrote our own vows for the ceremony, so we got to put our own personal touch on them! It all passed by in such a blur, but in that moment, it really felt like it was just the two of us!" - S

ADVICE FROM ONE COUPLE TO ANOTHER: "Come up with a list of priorities and figure out what you actually have strong opinions on versus what you don't, and delegate accordingly. If you have really strong opinions about the flowers, cool. If you're like me and don't know anything about flowers, maybe just send along your colours and let your florist have fun with it. If you have family members that are really excited about certain details that you don't have an exact vision for, let them loose on Etsy. If you have a very specific vision about the venue you want, book that first." - S
